Galli Islands Positano Homer Odyssey

Galli Island

POSITANO

Li Galli islands, the three rocky and lonely islands (Gallo Lungo, Castelluccio and Rotonda) located a few miles from the beach of Positano, mirror themselves in the limpid sea facing the pearl of the Amalfi coast. According to old legends, they were inhabited by the Sirenes (Mermaids) who seduced sailors with their melodious voice: they lost control of their ships that inevitably crashed on the rocks of the islands (this is a clear transposition in a mythological key of the dangers during the navigation).

In the Odyssey, Homer tells us that Odysseus blocked his men's ears with beeswax, and made them tie him to the foot of the mast so he could not be drawn away by the lure of the Sirens' song.

Already Strabo, a Greek geographer of the I century b.C., identified this three small islands as the Sirens' seat, calling them "Sirenai" or "Sirenussai". In 1131 they were called "Guallo" and in 1225 Federico II Swabian donate this archipelago to the monastery of Positano ("tres Sirenas quae dicitur Gallus").

The place name brings to mind the ancient Greek iconography, which represented the sirens as a bird with human face and not as a being half human and half fish as the Medieval tradition suggests us.

Periodically visited by Tiberius, protected by the Angevins with the Tower for dissuading raiders to take refuge on it, the last inhabitants of these isles having their own natural charm, have been the choreographer Leonide Massine (who built here a wonderful villa, on the ruins of an ancient Roman Li Galli, also called Sirenuse, is a small archipelago of three islands: Gallo Lungo, Rotonda and Castelluccio, which was considered abode of the enchantresses Sirens. The archipelago is located a few miles away from Positano. The most important evidence for the location comes from Strabo, Greek geographer who lived in the first century BC. These are two pieces that identify the Li Galli islands - in the stretch of sea facing Positano - with the three solitary and rocky islands as the seat of the Sirens.villa, subsequently decorated by the architect Le Corbusier) and the ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev.

Li Galli, also called Sirenuse, is a small archipelago of three islands: Gallo Lungo, Rotonda and Castelluccio, which was considered abode of the enchantresses Sirens. The archipelago is located a few miles away from Positano. The most important evidence for the location comes from Strabo, Greek geographer who lived in the first century BC. These are two pieces that identify the Li Galli islands - in the stretch of sea facing Positano - with the three solitary and rocky islands as the seat of the Sirens.

For the Greek mythology, sirens represent danger and distraction, the story goes that many sailors, crossing that stretch of sea, then sank. It is said that, the name Li Galli, derives from the Siren's iconography in the ancient Greek figurative art, in which you have to imagine them as half woman and half bird: the "Greek" Sirens, therefore, should not be confused with the half woman and half fish Sirens of the medieval tradition. The most immediate matching you can do with these "feathered" sirens, it is with a hen or a rooster (Italian, respectively Gallina and Gallo), hence the name Li Galli still used today.

Li Galli host an Angevin tower that, due to the important position, had a peculiarity: the "Li Galli" tower, in fact, had its own castellan. The figure of the castellan was hosted long before the archipelago became an attraction for celebrities, from 1924 onwards. The charm of these islands has attracted many actors, painters, poets, and dancers throughout the years indeed. In fact, in 1924, Leonide Massine, Russian choreographer and dancer, bought the islands and built on Gallo Lungo (the largest of the three), a beautiful villa. In her honor is held every year an international award for the art of dancing. The property then passed to another famous Russian dancer, Rudolf Nureyev, who acquired it in 1989. Shortly after his death in 1993, the archipelago has passed into the hands of other individuals. Li Galli Islands are currently part of the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella, and you can reach them by sea.

CASA Il GLICINE Casa Il Glicine is part of an old villa elegantly furnished and with beautiful antique terracotta tiles and majolica. The house offers all comforts to provide a peaceful environment and privacy. From the panoramic terrace you can enjoy a spectacular view, where you can admire the bay of Fornillo with the Saracen tower of Clavel and opposite the island of Li Galli. The Three islets, Syrenusse for the ancient, is a mythical place where the sirens tried to enchant Ulysses with their song.
The island of Li galli was home to the choreographer Leonide Massive and then the dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The house is on two levels. The upper floor of the apartment has a fully equipped kitchen (dishwasher, Oven Freezer, crockery) a living room with sofas, armchairs and dining area with fireplace, a double bedroom and a bathroom with shower. This floor has access to the panoramic terrace with garden furniture, benches with cushions, a large table with chairs under a wisteria covered gazebo for dinning and breakfast and chairs where to enjoy an aperitif admiring the beautiful view. The lower floor consists of a double bedroom with a large bathroom with bath and shower - all covered with antique majolica - A bedroom with a sofa bed to accommodate two people in a room without a window but with air conditioning and another bathroom with shower.
The house provides air conditioning, heating central system, Wi-Fi, bed linen and bath towels changed weekly. Service does not include a final cleaning fee of 180 euro, daily cleaning if required and a supplement of 140 euro per week for heating or air conditioning depending on the season. The house is located down a few steps from the main road and in the vicinity there are restaurants, newsagent, supermarket, pharmacy, hairdresser, barber shop and bus stop for the shuttle bus.
The beaches are within easy walk from the main road or down the famous antique steps known as 'la scalinatella' which from the house lead down to the main harbour in a few minutes. The guest can easily access all amenities; restaurants, pharmacy, supermarket, hairdresser and bar. It is also very close to the main road and bus stop for the shuttle bus that takes around Positano. The parking is not offered with this property. However there are many garages where to leave the car. In high season, it's not recommended to bring a car as in Positano is not really needed and for trip to nearby villages it is easier and more convenient to get a taxi or public transports. There is a shuttle bus that goes in circle around Positano. There are also buses to nearby villages such as Praiano or Amalfi or Sorrento that can also be reached by boat from the main harbour. The airport is at about an hour distance by car. In summer there is a choice of getting to Positano from Naples by hydrofoil but this service needs to be confirmed every season. We recommend taking a taxi directly to Positano as it's more comfortable and also economically more convenient.
